The happy ending or how police operates in Czech Republic

I’ve been thinking this blog deserved an ending, finally. I’ve been very busy lately so here it comes now, better late than never.

First, I’d like to finally say what I’ve really been thinking for the whole time, just didn’t want to pour even more oil into the fire.

Czech police guys, yes, you fuc*ers, who’ve been doing nothing for the whole time just making sure you’ll stick to the law, so no one can touch you, that’s exactly way to go. Every time I went to the police station after the media has published the case, they somehow managed to add one or two more investigators to be responsible for the case, just in case someone would screw up and it’d be on the news again. I won’t forget you your comments about me ruining investigation by publishing the stuff here, sure, I did. How would the case end without it – we’ll never know, my humble guess is it would be closed earlier, with even less results.

So, long story short, police returned the laptop, saying they found jack. No fingerprints, no DNA, no nothing. There was a hopeless try to get some evidence by giving the laptop to an independent technician, however no luck there.

Czech police is way too good in closure, oh god how I’d like to be as good as they’re. They’ve closed everything, quickly, quietly, and nicely.

The case of the robbed apartment – closed; result: Two unknown suspects broke in and so on and so on, postponed. Till forever I guess.

The case against me filled by “The Wanker’s family” – closed; result: nothing violating the law was found.

Oh, yes, I'd forget, that fancy lawyer who said he's gonna sue me, ask for an apology, public apology and hundreds of thousands CZK as a compensation actually never did anything.

So there I go, with my old Macbook after it’d traveled half of the Czech Republic, witnessed people doing various things, siting in the Police wardrobe for a while, now back home.

My camera is gone for good, when I asked the police guys if there’s gonna be a case against the guy who claims to be reselling goods bought online, they’ve said there’s already something happening, but in a separate case, in which, I’m not the victim, so I have no right to know anything about the case, basically a lawful way of saying “go to hell already”.

Oh yes and the police guys didn’t forget to mention they actually know who broke into the apartment but have no evidence about that – claiming it was a “local junkie”, well known, but no evidence is no evidence. It’s not even in the case, so I guess if someone dares to ask them about it they’ll say it’s something I made up for the blog, sure, I did.

After all, I’d like to thank all the people that supported/helped me in any way, especially my lawyer and his office, they did awesome job dealing with the police guys who were “investigating”.

... and to say goodbye, here's a summary of the case made by Czech Television (some time just before the case was closed, so it doesn't say anything about the actual ending).

Hardworking police - summary #1

I haven't updated the blog for quite some time now, so I've decided to at least summarize what has been happening in past weeks.

This whole thing is now basically splitted into two:

  • Robbed apartment case
  • Complaint against me (is being treated as a separate case)

Robbed apartment case

Police continues to question all involved parties, the whole investigation is now mainly focused on the guy (and his relatives) who sold the Macbook to the family in Prague (for 11000,- CZK as some media have already mentioned).

This guy claims he was waiting for a bus in Prague and an unknown man offered him a laptop (my Macbook) for 5000,- CZK, as he only had 4800,- available, they've agreed on this price and he bought the laptop. Later, he arrived home, somehow got over my password (the exact method is not specified in the file) and my data were gone, he claims he had no clue a password reset could cause this (honestly, I have no clue what kind of a tool did he use and I rather don't wanna know).

After like a week of time he sold the laptop to his friend, the son of the family from Prague. You all know the story from that point on.

Perhaps one interesting thing, this youngster has a public facebook wall, so I've checked what's there, everybody sees it so why not, right? After scrolling a lot I've seen this (posted 2 days after the robbery):

Reseller

For those of you who don't know, these are the stolen items from my flat:

  • Macbook
  • Nikon D80 camera
  • some other minor items (2 hard drives, bag they have used to carry the stuff etc.)

Now if you haven't noticed yet, go back to that picture. What a nice coincidence (not ironically), selling 2 items at the same time (9 minutes between the two posts on facebook) while saying one was bought from an unknown man on a bus station and the other one .. it seems this guy has a nice business, he goes through aukro.cz site (Czech equivalent of e-bay) and looks for some items. Then he tries to find a buyer for these items for a higher price, if he succeeds he then buys the item(s) from aukro.cz and resells it/them to the buyer, great business idea, huh?

What regards to my D80 camera, he said he saw it on aukro.cz site and tried to advertise it on his facebook as he does for all the other items, but never managed to find a buyer so he never bought a camera after all and does no longer remember which offer on aukro.cz was it.

I would like to wish a good luck to this guy for this further business, perhaps he can sue me as well as a secondary business.

I still don't have the Macbook back, I tried to get the police to take fingerprints from it, my request was denied couple of times and after the Macbook was finally passed to the police technicians they've claimed there is no collectable evidence on the laptop whatsoever. Police is now waiting for the woman who returned the laptop and now can raise an objection against conclusion/verdict from the police about the Macbook being passed back to me - a little absurd but from the law point of view - seems correct.

I can't really tell much more right now as police already made clear I should stop posting any information about the case and mainly its investigation otherwise they will accuse me with obstruction of a police investigation.

Complaint against me

A different police department called me up as I mentioned in one of the previous posts asking me to come for kind of an interrogation. So I went there with my lawyer, spend there like an hour, explaining the policeman what has actually happened and how.

Family from Prague said I claimed they were the actual robbers. I would like to high light the fact I've never posted anything like that. All the previous posts were only saying these people are using the laptop, some media pointed out the fact they may just be the 'new owners', some of them rather called them robbers to make their articles more interesting, not something I could have influenced.

I gave the policeman all the previous posts from the blog (which are not public anymore after the Macbook was returned) along with all the other information he has asked for. Their investigation continues, I have no more news so far.

As soon as I will have some updates I will update the blog, however it seems it may take quite some time to get to something.

However, stay tuned.

Nice summary of the case (what wasn't on TV)

This time I will make my Czech and Slovak readers happy, however I'll probably disappoint my English speaking readers (you can now use some online translator ;))

There is a very nice summary of the whole case on lupa.cz, author of the article (even if he never managed to contact me before releasing the article) made a great job digging through all the available information, his view on the case is here:

http://www.lupa.cz/clanky/pripad-smirujiciho-macbooku-co-v-televiznich-novinach-nebylo/

Stay tuned for more updates on the case, investigation is now in some kind of a progress and I'm not able to publish additional information as police already "noted" they can accuse me with obstruction of a police investigation, so for now you will have to hang on a little, but be sure I will finish the story as soon as I will be able to do so.

Complaint against me has just been raised

As the family said before, they were planning on suing me for publishing their photos, they almost did so.

I have received a call from a local police station in Prague 8 (Bohnice) from an officer telling me they've raised a complaint against me.

From Czech law point of view it's different from suing I'd say (not sure if my translations are 100% correct):

  • Complaint (trestni oznameni in Czech) is a part of criminal law and police has to investigate such thing if someone comes to the police and raises one.
  • Suit (zaloba in Czech) on the other hand can involve any law (for example peronal/privacy law) and is handled directly by court, not police.

Therefore I will have to go the Police station, explain them how I obtained the photos and go over the whole thing again.

My friend started a Facebook page, in case you'd like to support me, you're welcome to like it on the right side of the blog.

I'm getting sued for the blog - Media reaction

As you may have read today, I'm being/going to be sued for this blog.

UPDATE: I've managed to get footages I'm aware about, so I'm updating the blog with the videos.

Media has already reacted heavilly again and you can watch three footages here:

I'm going to retrieve the case file from the police tomorrow - so stay tuned for updates.

Seems like Macbook could be back

A guy just called me claiming he's from police station in Prague 8 - Bohnice (city part), saying a woman brought a laptop to the police station asking for removal of the photos on the blog as the woman claimed they're victims just as I'm (this is something which was not explained in any other way, the call was received from Blocked number and laptop should be passed to criminal police).

Therefore I have put all the posts on hold, I will know more tomorrow - when I will speak to the policeman from criminal police who has this case assigned, after this I will put another update here explaining the situation.

Till then, blog remains without any photos of these people, as I do not want to humiliate innocent people - if that's really the case, I really can't be sure now.

Time will show if this is really the case or just something someone claims - in that case all the posts are coming back.
